As a breast medical oncologist and recipient of Susan G Komen early career grant funding, I recognize the vital importance of Komen's efforts to fund breast cancer research and programs to support patients with breast cancer. Now, more than ever, Komen's mission will be critical. As federal funding from the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute is cut dramatically, research funding from foundations like Komen will soon be the one of the few ways to conduct truly innovative breast cancer research - particularly research that aims to address breast cancer treatment and improve outcomes for ALL patients with breast cancer.
