Breast cancer is expected to be the most common cancer diagnosis in the U.S. in 2024, representing 32% of all newly diagnosed cancers. Every two minutes, a new case of breast cancer is identified in the country. This year, an estimated 310,000 women and 2,800 men will receive a breast cancer diagnosis, with an additional 56,500 women diagnosed with ductal carcinoma. Tragically, 43,000 women are expected to die from breast cancer in 2024. However, there are over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. today.
Susan G. Komen is the only organization that tackles breast cancer on multiple fronts, including research, community health, global outreach, and public policy. Their efforts have made a significant impact in the fight against this disease.
This year, I am participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K, the Detroit Free Press 1 Mile, 5K, and the U.S. Half Marathon to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
The Susan G. Komen organization has played a key role in advancing research that has led to significant breakthroughs in understanding the biology of breast cancer. These insights have helped drive the development of risk reduction strategies, earlier detection methods, and innovative treatments, contributing to a more than 42% reduction in breast cancer mortality.
To date, Susan G. Komen has invested nearly $3.6 billion in research, community health programs, advocacy, and global outreach in over 60 countries. Thanks to this research, 19 new breast cancer drugs have been approved in the past decade, with Komen serving as a catalyst for many of these advancements.
