Darryl's Story

Darryl Traweek raised more than $100,000 for Susan G. Komen the same way he climbed 20,000 feet to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro - one step at a time. An avid adventure-seeker, Darryl, who is the director of RBC Wealth Management’s West division, made the treacherous journey to encourage others to do more - in the office, at home, or for a cause. Darryl decided to raise money on behalf of Susan G. Komen in honor of his father and three friends who passed away from cancer. Celebrating every donation big or small, he continued to share his story of strength and determination to anyone who would listen. The climb was taxing both physically and emotionally but Darryl was encouraged by his donors, even allowing them to virtually follow his journey. Truly embodying what it means to make an impact, Darryl vows to always do more for the causes and people in which he believes.

Rocket Story

Teenaged friends Dylan Whitesel and Sanzio Angeli had a cause: to support Dylan’s mother, who had been diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer when he was in the 7th grade, and to help fight breast cancer in a big way. Out of this commitment came Rocket4theCure, which Dylan and Sanzio created to raise money for the battle against breast cancer. And they broke a world record while they were at it. On October 26, 2014, the two friends launched 3,973 rockets simultaneously, shattering the Guinness World Record. The rockets, which people could sponsor in honor or memory of a loved one, were such a successful fundraiser that Dylan and Sanzio were able to donate $20,000 to Komen Central Virginia, for breast cancer research, treatment and awareness programs.

Baseball Gives Back

Lynne Williamson is the mother of three boys and was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2010. Her husband, Shawn, wanted to support her by raising awareness and funds as a way to give back to the “village” and the larger “community” that supported them in a time of need. Shawn serves as the Executive Director for Thunder Baseball League. With support of the board of directors, the vision of “Bats for a Cure” tournament to benefit Susan G. Komen Colorado was born. Thunder Baseball League’s “Bats for a Cure” Baseball Tournament has been so successful, that this year during its 4th annual tournament, they raised close to $20,000.

A record turnout of 200 baseball teams from across the state supported this year’s event on May 30-31, 2015. The tournament’s mission is to help develop youth into active community members using baseball as the vehicle. Lynne describes that during her battle to defeat breast cancer her family and friends were the “best support team on the planet!”

Evelyn & Sierra’s Lemonade Stand

Evelyn and Sierra are familiar young faces for Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure walkers. For the last several years, Evelyn and Sierra have devoted themselves to the fight against breast cancer by handing out delicious lemonade to thirsty Racers and donating all proceeds to Komen Missouri.

This year at their local Race for the Cure event, the sisters made 45 gallons of lemonade and raised a record-breaking $501, bringing their total donation over the years to more than $1,100. Komen Missouri thanks these young and committed warriors!

Firefighters in the Fight

Firefighter Mike L. faces fear every day, but nothing prepared him for hearing his wife Tina was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“My wife being BCRA1 we’ve always tried to be involved, we’ve always looked for more opportunities to help make a difference.”

Mike and his IAFF local wore pink shirts in October to help raise funds, and as Tina puts it, “people are going to see the firefighters in their pink shirts and it’s going to make them think about breast cancer.”

As part of their national efforts, the International Association of FireFighters is pinking out cities across the country by wearing pink shirts while on duty and bringing awareness about this disease to their communities through local fundraising events.
